Iceland's greatest hits in a single day

The south coast of Iceland packs more raw natural beauty into 200 kilometers than most countries fit in their whole borders. This route takes you from waterfalls you can walk behind, to hidden falls almost no one finds, to the eerie wreckage of a plane on a black desert, all the way to the most famous black sand beach on earth — finishing in the cozy seaside village of Vík. The Route

Seljalandsfoss
STOP 1
Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss

An iconic 60-meter waterfall that you can actually walk behind. The path leads you through the mist into a natural alcove where you stand right behind the cascading water — one of the most magical experiences in Iceland.

💡 Insider tip: Bring a waterproof jacket — you will get soaked walking behind it. Best at golden hour when sunlight beams through the spray.
Gljúfrabúi
STOP 2
Hidden Falls

Gljúfrabúi

A secret waterfall hidden inside a narrow canyon just a short walk from Seljalandsfoss. Wade through a small stream to discover a towering waterfall thundering down inside a moss-covered chamber. Pure magic.

💡 Insider tip: Wear waterproof boots — you'll need to walk through shallow water to reach it. Most tourists skip it, so it stays peaceful.
Skógafoss
STOP 3
Waterfall

Skógafoss

A massive 60-meter wide curtain of water that thunders down with such force it creates a permanent rainbow on sunny days. You can climb the staircase beside it for jaw-dropping views from above.

💡 Insider tip: Climb the stairs to the top for a totally different perspective and a view of the river snaking through the highlands.
Kvernufoss
STOP 4
Hidden Falls

Kvernufoss

A hidden gem just minutes from Skógafoss but visited by almost nobody. Tucked inside a dramatic green canyon, you can walk behind this waterfall too — and usually have it completely to yourself.

💡 Insider tip: Park at the Skógar museum and follow the path through the gate. The 15-minute walk is part of the magic.
Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck
STOP 5
Landmark

Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck

The haunting wreckage of a US Navy plane that crash-landed on a black sand desert in 1973. The skeletal aluminum frame against the endless black sand creates one of the most surreal photo spots on earth.

💡 Insider tip: It's a 4km walk each way from the parking lot — wear good shoes and bring water. Sunset light here is unreal.
Dyrhólaey
STOP 6
Viewpoint

Dyrhólaey

A dramatic clifftop promontory with a giant rock arch jutting into the Atlantic. From the top you get sweeping views of black sand beaches stretching for miles in both directions, with puffins nesting on the cliffs in summer.

💡 Insider tip: Visit in summer (June-August) for puffin spotting. The upper viewpoint road is sometimes closed — check before heading up.
Reynisfjara
STOP 7
Beach

Reynisfjara

The most famous black sand beach in the world. Towering basalt columns, dramatic sea stacks rising from the ocean and powerful Atlantic waves crashing onto jet black sand — it feels like another planet.

💡 Insider tip: Never turn your back to the ocean — sneaker waves here are deadly. Stay well back from the waterline at all times.
Vík í Mýrdal
STOP 8
Town

Vík í Mýrdal

Iceland's southernmost village, perched between black sand beaches and green moss-covered cliffs. The iconic red-roofed church on the hill overlooking the village is one of the most photographed spots in the country.

💡 Insider tip: End your day with dinner at one of the local restaurants — fresh fish soup and Icelandic lamb hit different after a long day of exploring.
